Police arrested a man after recovering an unlicensed firearm and 19 rounds of ammunition during a crime prevention operation in Eldorado Park on Friday, 21 August.

Members of the Eldorado Park SAPS Crime Prevention Unit and Gauteng Traffic Wardens were conducting duties in the area at about 16:00 when they received information about a man reportedly pointing a firearm at people near Turf Avenue, Hillbrow Flats in Old Eldorado Park.

Officers responded to the address and found a man matching the description sitting with friends.

According to police, officers identified themselves before searching, with consent, a black sling bag in the man’s possession.

Inside the bag, police found a black 9mm pistol loaded with eight live rounds. An additional magazine containing 11 live rounds was also recovered.

The man was unable to produce a valid firearm licence and was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Police said the recovered firearm will undergo ballistic testing to establish whether it may be linked to other crimes.

The suspect is expected to appear in a Magistrate’s Court today, 24 August .
