The City of Johannesburg’s Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM) Region G commemorated Mandela Day with a meaningful community outreach initiative at New Generation Combined School in Phumla Mqashi, Lenasia South.

The event brought together City officials, donors and learners in the true spirit of Nelson Mandela’s legacy of selfless service. The Office of the MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services (GCSS), joined CRUM Region G officials in support of the initiative.

A major highlight of the day was the official opening of a newly installed borehole at the school, which will provide learners and educators with a reliable and sustainable water source. The borehole was generously sponsored by Salaamedia and Frimax, whose contribution will have a lasting impact on the school’s daily operations and overall wellbeing.

Further enhancing the school’s environment, Olympic Paints donated paint that enabled the refurbishment of the school buildings. Before learners arrived, much of the school had already been transformed through the generous support of volunteers.

The programme included speeches from City representatives and stakeholders, during which the invaluable contributions of all donors and partners were acknowledged and celebrated. Officials were also taken on a guided tour of the school premises, where they viewed the newly commissioned borehole and water storage tank, as well as the school’s vegetable garden, which promotes sustainability and supports food security initiatives.

In keeping with the Mandela Day call to dedicate 67 minutes of service to others, City officials rolled up their sleeves and assisted in painting the school’s kitchen, further improving the learning environment and demonstrating that meaningful change is achieved through collective action.

The City of Johannesburg extends its sincere appreciation to Frimax, Salaamedia and Olympic Paints for their generous support, as well as all officials, volunteers and stakeholders who contributed to making the initiative a success.
