The Zakariyya Park community is mourning the deaths of two learners from Zakariyya Park Combined School following separate incidents earlier this month.
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) confirmed that Mpho Ngwenya, a Grade 10 learner, died in hospital on 14 July, after sustaining injuries at a field in Lehae on Friday, 3 July. According to the department, Mpho “was subsequently rushed to the nearest hospital where he was receiving medical attention, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.”
Grade 12 learner Jaylin Visagie died on Sunday, 19 July, after reportedly sustaining an injury from an alleged stray bullet in Eldorado Park.
Onwabile Lubhelwana, GDE MEC Lebogang Maile’s spokesperson said: “Our Psycho-Social Support team was dispatched to the school to offer necessary support to all affected by this unfortunate incident.”
The school said a joint memorial service for Mpho and Jaylin will be held on Thursday, 23 July, at 12pm in the Zakariyya Park Combined School Hall.
The school has also appealed to members of the Christian community to assist with officiating during the memorial service.
Lubhelwana added: “We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the school community at large during this difficult period.”
