The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is pleased to announce the successful apprehension of a suspect linked to a hijacking incident that recently circulated on social media.

On Sunday, 17 May 2026, members of the JMPD Tactical Response Unit (TRU), acted on information regarding a viral video going around on social media platforms. The footage shows a male hijacking an Uber driver, an incident that has sparked significant public concern.

Following a tip-off, officers proceeded to a residence in Zola 3, Soweto. Upon entering the premises, officers found two males and one female. One of the males closely matched the description of the individual captured in the video.

Upon contact with the TRU officers, the suspect stated that he had been preparing to hand himself over to the police at Jabulani SAPS. The 20-year-old suspect was immediately arrested.

The JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca has commended the diligent work of the officers whose coordination led to this swift arrest.

The JMPD remains committed to removing violent criminals from our streets and ensuring that those who target public transport and e-hailing services face the full might of the law.
