The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has commenced a R20 million infrastructure upgrade at the Ennerdale Landfill Site aimed at strengthening security and improving operational control at the facility.

Speaking to GLOBE POST, JDA’s Elias Nkabinde said the upgrade is intended to significantly reduce illegal access, curb vandalism and support more effective waste management operations. He said: “This project is about improving security and ensuring better operational control at the landfill facility.”

The project entails the full establishment of the construction site, beginning with site clearance and preparation. Nkabinde said: ” The project involves construction of approximately 2.05 km of reinforced concrete boundary wall, using steel formwork to ensure structural integrity, durability and associated finishing works, including concrete curing, surface finishing and site rehabilitation

The total budget involves covering demolition works, materials, labour, plant and equipment, supervision and all associated finishing works.

“The contract has been awarded to Ximambana Trading Enterprise, which is responsible for carrying out the work in accordance with approved engineering designs, technical specifications and safety and environmental compliance standards,” Nkabinde added.

Beyond infrastructure improvements, the project is also contributing to local economic development. To date, 23 local labourers have been appointed on site. JDA says the project prioritises local labour in line with Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) principles and broader socio-economic development objectives.

“We are committed to ensuring that surrounding communities benefit directly through employment opportunities and skills exposure during the construction period,”Nkabinde concluded.
