Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of a Grade 8 girl learner from Qalabotjha Secondary School in Vlakfontein, Johannesburg South earlier this morning on Tuesday, 9 September.
According to reports, the learner suddenly collapsed at the school and sadly passed away before emergency services could treat her. The school immediately contacted her family and emergency services, with police and an ambulance responding swiftly to the scene. Unfortunately, she was certified dead at school.
The deceased learner has two siblings currently enrolled in Grade 10 and 12 at the school. Her Grade 12 sibling was writing a Business Studies examination this morning when the unfortunate incident took place; and has since been provided with necessary curriculum support and guidance.
The Department will urgently deploy psychosocial support teams to the school. These teams will assist learners, staff, and the bereaved family in dealing with the emotional impact of this sudden and tragic loss.
“We are devastated by the passing of one of our learners. Losing a child so suddenly is an unimaginable tragedy that no parent, sibling, or school community should ever have to face. Our hearts go out especially to her brother and sister, who are also learners at the school, as they navigate this painful moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and everyone at Qalabotjha Secondary during this difficult time,” said MEC Chiloane.
