Southern Joburg communities unite to condemn Apartheid Israel and stand with Palestine

LenzPolitics, in partnership with faith leaders, civic organisations and residents from communities across southern Johannesburg-including Lenasia, Ennerdale, Zakariya Park, Lawley, Lehae, Vlakfontein, Finetown, Thembelihle and Wheelers Farm-has issued a powerful community petition condemning the apartheid State of Israel and pledging solidarity with the people of Palestine.

The collective, formed from what it calls a “magnificent diversity,” drew parallels between the horrors of Israeli apartheid and South Africa’s own past under the dehumanising Group Areas Act. “We mourn with the Palestinian people – children, mothers, fathers and elders – who are our siblings of faith and struggle,” the statement reads.

The petition calls for: The arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, holding him responsible for war crimes and genocide. An immediate and permanent ceasefire, and the release of all hostages and Palestinian political prisoners. Access to food, water and medical aid through credible international humanitarian agencies-not organisations aligned with the Israeli military. The establishment of a free and independent Palestinian state, with peaceful co-existence among Muslims, Christians and Jews in the Middle East.

The petition also honours global acts of solidarity, including the Madleen boat activists, student protests on US campuses and the Gaza Soumoud Humanitarian Aid Convoy

“As formerly oppressed people, we carry in memory our united struggles against apartheid. We therefore pledge solidarity with the oppressed and colonised people of Palestine,” the petition reads.

The community calls on local leaders and South African citizens to stand up, speak out and take action in support of Palestine.
