On 8 April, Ward 7 marked a proud milestone with the official launch of multi-purpose sports courts at Fred Norman Secondary and Finetown Primary Schools.

In a landmark development for the ward, these schools have been selected to receive newly constructed combi-courts, a first-of-its-kind initiative for the area. Spearheaded by the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, in partnership with The Sports Trust and the City of Joburg, the project brings hope, excitement and opportunity to local youth.

The state-of-the-art multi-purpose courts will accommodate a range of sporting codes, including netball, basketball, tennis, volleyball and five-a-side soccer-aiming to nurture physical development, teamwork, and a healthy lifestyle among learners.

Representatives from the Office of the Honourable Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, along with The Sports Trust, visited Ward 7 to present the official rollout plan. The event saw a warm turnout from school principals, SGBs, local sports federations, various stakeholders and residents-all united in celebration.

From the Office of Ward Councillor Lois Simonse, the launch was described as a powerful moment of progress: “While it might seem like a small step, this is a huge achievement for Ward 7. It reflects the government’s dedication to uplifting communities and investing in the potential of our youth, through the leadership of Minister Gayton McKenzie.”

The people of Ward 7 extend heartfelt thanks to Minister McKenzie, the City of Joburg, and all involved for choosing their schools and turning what once seemed impossible into a proud, tangible reality. These new courts stand not only as sports facilities-but as symbols of growth, unity and hope for the next generation.
