Johannesburg, South Africa – Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) is thrilled to announce that throughout October, all pensioners are invited to enjoy free access to the Johannesburg Zoo during the week.

This special initiative aims to provide it’s valued senior citizens with an unforgettable experience, connecting them with some of nature’s most majestic creatures. Pensioners and retirement homes are encouraged to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to enjoy a day of exploration, education and connection with the Johannesburg Zoo’s most rare and extraordinary species, including the Big 5.

This limited offer is valid until 31 October 2024. October is set aside by the United Nations to honour and appreciate senior citizens under this year’s theme, “Aging with Dignity.” This serves as a reminder to respect and support the health and fulfilment of our elders. With approximately 9% of South Africans aged 60 and older, and life expectancy rising to 65 years, it is essential to equip our elder citizens with the resources to enjoy their golden years with health, dignity, and a sense of belonging.

In 2024, the rise in chronic illness among seniors has become a pressing concern. Encouraging our elders to enjoy the outdoors and maintain a well-balanced health regime is vital. Families are urged to bring their aging relatives to the Joburg Zoo.

For ease of movement, golf carts are available for hire inside the facility. Remember to pack a picnic basket, sunscreen, sunhats, camping chairs, and comfortable shoes.

The general public, including children, will pay the normal entrance fees of R126 per adult, R74 per child, R74 for students (weekdays only with student card), R47 for school groups (per person on Mondays to Fridays), and R47 for differently abled persons. This offer does not include planned events at the Joburg Zoo, such as Zoo Trot and is only valid for entrance to the zoo on weekdays.

For many visitors, this is a chance to hear the roar of a lion, the trumpeting of an elephant, or to get up close and marvel at the agility and beauty of the zoo’s big cats, including the cheetahs, lions and tigers.

The Johannesburg Zoo is committed to making this experience memorable for all our revered senior visitors.
