Daxina Striders lead enthusiastic send-off for 2024 Comrades Marathon
On 1 June, the Daxina Striders, along with other runners from the South, held a joint send-off for the upcoming Comrades Marathon, also known as the “Ultimate Human Race.” The event began at Daxina Primary School, the home ground of the Daxina Striders Athletic Club, with a 10km group run.
These athletes, having endured months of rigorous training and qualified through a standard marathon, are set to participate in the marathon on 9 June in Durban.
The send-off included inspirational, educational and motivational talks, accompanied by breakfast, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie among the athletes. One of the most memorable moments was when each athlete made a pledge, signing under their picture on a poster board, vowing to complete the Comrades Marathon, united under the slogan “Nakanjani-No Doubt!” The background music, “Chariots of Fire,” evoked the feeling of unity and determination, reminiscent of soldiers preparing for battle.
The 97th Comrades Marathon, starting in Durban and ending in Pietermaritzburg, covers a route of 85.91km, challenging participants to complete it within 12 hours.
Among the Daxina Striders athletes are Kovalan Moodley (attempting his 40th marathon), Komalan Moodley, Rudelle Wendy Moodley, Robert Munyai, Ndivho Munyai, Brian Godzwana, Lucky Godzwana, Thendo Nemukula, Desmond Sithole and Jonathan Mpofu.
Wendy Moodley, said: “We extend our best wishes to every runner from the Daxina Striders and the Southern Group taking on this life-changing race. We are behind you. Bring those medals home.”
Globe Post extends its best wishes to all the athletes participating in the Comrades Marathon. Bring back the medals!
