When the sniffles and coughs of the common cold or flu hit, many people look for relief from their kitchen cupboards and traditional remedies passed down through generations.

Here are some tried-and-true home remedies for cold and flu relief that can help you manage the symptoms and perhaps shorten the duration of your illness.

8 home remedies for cold and flu relief

1. Stay Hydrated

Keeping hydrated is crucial when fighting the flu or a cold. Water, juice, clear broth and warm lemon water with honey help loosen congestion and prevent dehydration. Avoid alcohol, coffee and caffeinated sodas, which can make dehydration worse.

2. Honey and Lemon

A time-honoured remedy, honey has antibacterial properties and can provide soothing relief for a sore throat. Lemon adds a boost of vitamin C and can lighten the intensity of a cold. Mix two teaspoons of honey with the juice of half a lemon in a cup of warm water. This mixture can ease inflammation and soothe your throat.

3. Ginger Tea

Ginger is reputed to help with congestion and reduce inflammation. You can make ginger tea by slicing ginger into a cup of boiling water and letting it steep for several minutes before drinking. Add a little honey or lemon to enhance the taste and the soothing effect.

4. Garlic

Garlic contains allicin, a compound that can help fight infection and bacteria. Adding a garlic supplement to your diet or including more garlic in your meals can potentially ease cold symptoms. For a powerful tonic, try mincing fresh garlic and steeping it in hot water, then straining it and drinking the liquid as tea.

5. Chicken Soup

Chicken soup isn’t just good for the soul; it’s a helpful remedy for colds and flu as well. The steam can relieve nasal congestion, and the nutritious ingredients can help strengthen the immune system. Homemade chicken soup with vegetables contains essential nutrients and vitamins that can combat the illness.

6. Steam Inhalation

Inhaling steam can help soothe the lining of the nasal passages, relieve nasal congestion, and calm a cough. Cover your head with a towel and lean over a bowl of hot water, breathing deeply through your nose for 5 to 10 minutes. Adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil can also help clear your airways.

7. Saltwater Gargle

Gargling with salt water can reduce throat swelling, cleanse the throat, and loosen mucus. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a full glass of warm water and gargle it to help relieve throat pain.

8. Rest

Your body needs to heal, and that requires rest. Make sure to give your body enough sleep and relaxation, which can significantly help the immune system fight off viruses.

While these remedies can provide symptomatic relief, it’s important to note that they do not cure the flu or cold. If your symptoms persist or worsen, consulting a healthcare provider is recommended. Stay cosy and get well soon!
