ANC loses Ward 07 to PA

The African National Congress (ANC) has lost the City of Johannesburg’s Ward 07 to the Patriotic Alliance (PA) following the by-elections which took place yesterday, 28 June.

The seat became vacant after former ANC Cllr Amelia Zama, resigned and jumped ship to the join the PA. The by-election was marred by low voter turnout with 6 971 votes cast from the 20 589 registered voters.

In the 2021, Local Government elections, it was a tight race between the ANC and PA with the former receiving 3 571 votes and the latter pulling 3 199.

This time around, the PA emerged victorious with 3 233 votes while the ANC only managed to pull 1 684.

Nine candidates appeared on the ballot including the Democratic Alliance’s candidate, Randell Markgraaff who pulled out of the race.

  • PA’s Lois Cathleen Simonse – 3 233
  • ANC’s Sipho Maxin Lukhele – 1 684
  • Action SA’s Luvuyo Kamba – 1 000
  • EFF’s Thabiso Godfrey Thuputlela – 583
  • Randell Markgraaff – 241
  • Independent candidate Amelia Ann Naude – 69
  • Al Jama Ah’s Mxolisi Vuma – 67
  • IFP’s Royston Wynston Williams – 19
  • Amalgated Rainbow Movement’s Theophilus Emanuel Louw – 10
