On 27 April, the Cycle Club Lenasia (CCL), in collaboration with Lenz70, marked Freedom Day with an energizing 70 km cycling ride that started and ended at the Sasol Garage on Protea Avenue, Lenasia.

The event was especially meaningful as it also honoured the 78th birthday of Ismail Essay, affectionately known as Uncle Bhai, a cherished senior member of the club. The ride drew participation from several cycling clubs, including the Alchemy Cycle Club from the West Rand and Linden Social Cycles from Linden, fostering a strong sense of community and celebration among local cyclists.

Moosa Patel, Chairperson of CCL, expressed his enthusiasm for the event: “In partnership with the Lenz70 organizing team, we arranged an exciting 70-kilometer ride today. We were delighted by the turnout, with clubs from across Johannesburg joining us.”

He also commented on the weather, noting: “It was a crisp autumn morning-many cyclists dressed warmly at the start but quickly warmed up as the sun rose and the ride progressed. Autumn is perfect for cycling; the cool start and warm finish make for an enjoyable experience.”

Moosa also highlighted the impressive achievement of a young cyclist who completed the entire route, praising the support from family and fellow riders that helped make it possible.

Shaun Swartz of the Alchemy Cycle Club shared his pride in participating alongside CCL for such a meaningful occasion. “It’s vital for young people to find activities they enjoy. Staying engaged in cycling or other sports can help steer them away from negative influences,” he said.

Shaun emphasized that cycling promotes health, discipline and lifelong enjoyment. The celebration was further personalized by Uncle Bhai, who shared his inspiring story of taking up cycling at age 68 after winning a bicycle at an event. “I encouraged my friends and neighbours to join and that’s how my cycling journey began over ten years ago,” he recalled.

Beyond cycling, Uncle Bhai plays golf twice a week, exemplifying his dedication to staying active and healthy. When asked about his message to today’s youth amidst societal challenges, Uncle Bhai said: “Be good. Do good.”

His life exemplifies that age is just a number and that staying active benefits both physical and mental well-being. He added with a smile: “One day, I want to tell my grandchildren about my adventures on the golf course and the cycling paths.”

The event concluded with laughter, camaraderie and a shared appreciation for health, community and sport. It demonstrated how active living fosters strong bonds and lifelong friendships, celebrating not just freedom and birthdays but also the joy of staying connected through sport.
