More than 35 South African organisations, trade unions, women’s groups, youth formations and political parties have endorsed the upcoming protest rally for Palestine scheduled to take place on Friday (14 April) at 2pm at the Joburg City Council, 163 Civic Boulevard, Braamfontein.

South Africans from various walks of life and political formations will be gathering in protest against the most recent Israeli attacks on Palestinian worshippers.

Since last week’s violent escalation of aggression by Israel against Palestinian worshippers at the Al Aqsa compound, things have only worsened.

Yesterday, Israeli forces shot and killed a 16-year-old Palestinian teenager Mohammad Fayez Balhan in Jericho.

His father told reporters: “I went to help a wounded person, and when I reached him I realised it was my son. They shot him in the head, the shoulder, and the stomach.”

Balhan is the 18th child, and 100th Palestinian, to be killed by Israel in 2023 alone.

Friday’s picket in Johannesburg has been endorsed by, among others:

Friday’s protest in Johannesburg is part of a larger global outrage against Israel’s most recent violent escalation and aggression.

The upcoming Johannesburg protest 4 Palestine follows other similar actions that have taken place this last week in Minnesota, Manama, Chicago, London, New York, Tetouan, Manchester City, Boston, Los Angeles, Vienna, Dallas, Detroit, Sana’a, Dublin and elsewhere.

Africa4Palestine’s director, Muhammed Desai said: “Israel’s crimes will not be carried out under the cloak of darkness anymore. The Israeli regime is being exposed for the Apartheid state that it is. And it will be held accountable by the international community for its violations of international law and human rights abuses.”

The protestors and activists who will be gathering on Friday will also submit a memorandum to the City of Johannesburg to contribute to the public participation needed for the renaming of Sandton Drive to Leila Khaled Drive.
