Ennerdale resident Levona Steenveld has been nominated for the prestigious South African Heroes Award, a recognition that celebrates the selfless acts of kindness performed by ordinary citizens across the country. In its sixth year, the South African Heroes Award was established to recognize and celebrate the unsung heroes who dedicate their lives to making a difference in their communities.
Steenveld has been nominated in the Community Service category, one of the awards’ various categories, where she stands among 25 finalists. Her nomination highlights her unwavering dedication to serving others without seeking any monetary compensation.
She told Globe Post: “It is great that there were people out there who saw one’s selfless acts of kindness and felt the need to nominate me for one of the most prestigious awards across South Africa.”
Reflecting on her journey, Steenveld shared her initial mixed emotions about the nomination. “I was just doing what God instructed me to do with no concern about worldly rewards but confident that my rewards would be heavenly one day. Fulfilling my purpose on this earth is greater than any form of recognition or applause,” she explained.
However, she has come to appreciate the significance of being celebrated for her hard work, aligning with the timeless wisdom from Ecclesiastes 3: “There is a time and place for everything, and it’s my time now to be celebrated for all my hard work.”
The South African Heroes Award ceremony will be held at the Johannesburg Market Theatre on September 21, 2024, promising a spectacular event under the theme “Our Heritage.”

Steenveld remains humble and focused on her mission to serve, wishing all the candidates the best and urging everyone to continue being the change they want to see in the world. “I wish all the candidates the best and that we will continue being the change we want to see,” she concluded.
