Asylum seekers in South Africa may soon be able to begin their applications online, with the Department of Home Affairs planning to introduce a new registration and appointment system by 10 November 2026.
The proposed system is intended to help manage congestion at refugee reception offices, where overcrowding and unrest have raised concerns about access to services.
Under the planned process, applicants would register their intention to seek asylum online and receive a receipt containing a reference number, biometric details and an appointment date. Assisted registration would also be available at refugee reception offices for those who need help.
Home Affairs has emphasised that the receipt would not constitute an asylum seeker visa or confer refugee status. Instead, it would serve as proof that an individual has declared an intention to apply for asylum, with applicable legal protections while the process remains pending. The department also plans to approach the courts for guidance on implementing a Constitutional Court ruling relating to asylum matters.
Deportations are expected to continue, in accordance with the law, for individuals who have no pending asylum protection and those whose asylum claims have been finally rejected.
The 10 November date is a planned deadline for introducing the system, not confirmation that online registration is already available.
Applicants are advised to await official communication from the Department of Home Affairs before attempting to register or relying on the proposed process.
Globe Post will monitor further announcements on the implementation of the system and what it could mean for asylum seekers and affected communities.
