City steps up service delivery and compliance in Region G

Residents of Lehae Phase 1 and Zakariyya Park recently benefited from an integrated service delivery and compliance operation aimed at improving municipal services and ensuring businesses comply with City bylaws.

The operation brought together several City of Johannesburg departments and entities, including Johannesburg Water, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), City Power, Emergency Management Services (EMS), City Parks and Zoo, Public Works Programme and other municipal teams.

Regional Director Mickey Padayachee and MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services, Cllr Sithembiso Zungu, attended the operation and thanked officials for working together to improve service delivery.

“We appreciate every department and entity that continues to work together in ensuring our communities remain compliant and well serviced,” said Zungu.

During the operation, Johannesburg Water replaced a faulty valve, the JRA carried out scoffling and litter-picking, while City Power repaired faulty streetlights and conducted electricity connection audits.

Officials also inspected several businesses for compliance with municipal bylaws. In Lehae Phase 1, Abay Supermarket was issued with a compliance notice after it was found to be operating without approved building plans. The owner has been given 30 days to submit the required plans. JMPD also took an undocumented foreign national found operating the business to a police station for further processing.

TDF Supermarket was found to be compliant, with the operator holding valid asylum documentation and meeting the City’s requirements.

In Zakariyya Park, officials investigated reports of an alleged illegal mortuary but found the property was being used as a prayer room where funeral prayers are held before burials. Another property was found to be operating a vehicle spray-painting business without the necessary approvals and was issued with a warning.

EMS inspectors also issued warnings to several businesses and a residential property for failing to comply with approved building plan requirements.

The City of Johannesburg said integrated operations such as these help protect public health and safety while ensuring businesses and property owners comply with municipal regulations.
