The spirit of unity and determination was on full display as athletes from running clubs across Johannesburg South gathered for the Southern Group Comrades Marathon Send-off at Daxina Primary, Lenasia South on Saturday, 6 June.

The event brought together Comrades Marathon hopefuls and supporters under the theme “Together We Train. Together We Rise,” celebrating the dedication of runners preparing for one of South Africa’s most prestigious endurance races.

Daxina Striders General Secretary Rudelle Wendy Moodley, told GLOBE POST that the send-off showcased the strength of the Southern Group, which consists of several running clubs that regularly train together despite representing different organisations. “We have many athletes taking part in the Comrades Marathon, and this event is about coming together to encourage and support one another.”

The programme featured a 7km send-off run, followed by motivational talks, pledges of support, and opportunities for athletes to celebrate their shared passion for running before changing into their respective club colours.

Special guests included Coach Benzi, founder of TTP and a veteran with an impressive 20 Comrades finishes to his name. His presence served as inspiration for both first-time participants and seasoned runners preparing for the iconic ultra-marathon.

The event also provided a platform for runners to encourage one another ahead of race day, reinforcing the values of perseverance, discipline, and community that define the Comrades Marathon journey.

The organisers extended their heartfelt gratitude to all sponsors and partners whose contributions helped make the send-off a success, as well as the volunteers, supporters, and clubs that continue to invest in the growth of road running in the region.
