The City of Johannesburg kicked-off Operation Restore in Wards 121 and 7 in Ennerdale yesterday on 2 June, with MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene and the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) leading efforts to accelerate road maintenance and infrastructure upgrades in the area.
The initiative aims to address long-standing road infrastructure challenges while improving safety, accessibility, and service delivery for local residents.
MMC Kunene said residents had raised concerns about potholes, prompting the City to investigate the underlying causes of the deteriorating road conditions: “The community asked us to come and tackle the potholes. However, when JRA’s tactical team conducted an assessment, they discovered underground water issues.”
He added that the City had to address the underground water problem before repairing the roads: “We have started working on the underground water issue before fixing the potholes. We are asking the community to be patient with us. This is not a one-day project,” said MMC Kunene.
As part of the programme, several key interventions will be undertaken, including the installation of sub-soil drainage systems to improve water management, the construction of speed humps and installation of traffic safety signs to enhance road safety, the grading of gravel roads, and road patching and repair work on damaged streets.
In a social media post, JRA said the programme forms part of a broader effort to fast-track service delivery and improve road conditions across communities.
Residents have welcomed the intervention, which is expected to improve mobility, reduce road hazards, and enhance the overall quality of road infrastructure in the area.
