The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) remains committed to ensuring the safety of all road users within the City of Johannesburg. As part of our ongoing efforts to combat drunk driving, JMPD officers arrested a total of 171 motorists for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) of alcohol from Monday May 4, 2026, to Sunday May 10, 2026.
During these seven days, officers carried out various multidisciplinary operations, including roadblocks and specialised patrols across all regions and units.
The JMPD continues to adopt a “zero-tolerance” stance towards those who endanger their lives and others’ by driving while intoxicated.
“While we are encouraged by the continued efforts of our officers who successfully removed 171 impaired drivers from our streets this past week, the figure remains concerning,” said JMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner Patrick Jaca.
“Driving under the influence is not a mistake, it is a choice that can have fatal consequences. We urge residents to act responsibly and utilise alternative transport if they plan to consume alcohol. Our operations will remain heightened until the message is clear, if you drink and drive in Johannesburg, you will be arrested.”
The JMPD wishes to remind the public that road safety is a collective responsibility. We thank the law-abiding citizens of Johannesburg for their ongoing support in making our city safer.
