Siyaphambili Projects, a local non-profit organisation aimed at promoting education in the community, hosted a science quiz competition on 7 May, aimed at encouraging a stronger love for Maths and Science among learners from three schools in Lenasia South that showcased their knowledge and passion. The competition featured grade 11’s from Lenasia South Secondary School, Willowmead Secondary School and Southview Secondary School.

LSS emerged as the winners of the competition, showcasing outstanding talent, teamwork, and determination throughout the event. The victorious team-consisting of Bonginkosi Mazibuko, Ronewa Ndou, and Damian Baartman-captivated the judges with their exceptional science knowledge, innovative thinking, commitment, resilience, and impressive problem-solving skills.

Speaking to GLOBE POST, Siyaphambili Projects founder and chairperson Florence Mweli said the initiative was created to encourage learners to develop a stronger interest in Mathematics and Science: “We are trying to encourage learners to love Maths and Science because it will assist to develop on the departments that we are lacking as a country.”

She added that the organisation believes Maths and Science are critical subjects that contribute to economic growth and future development in South Africa.

The event also received support from Ward 120’s Cllr Puseletso Nzimande and Ward Committee Member, Joy Govender. Resident, Sharral Werth donated a specially designed cake to the organisation for the event.

As the competition unfolded, Cllr Nzimande delivered words of encouragement to the participating learners.“To our brilliant Ward 120 science learners, we are here to celebrate courage, discipline and the power of Maths. Maths demands patience as it is not easy. Everyone who participated has already won because you chose challenges rather than taking the easy way out,” she said.

Congratulating the winning team, Nzimande praised the learners for their hard work and determination.

“To our winners, you have shown that Ward 120 produces great minds, and your victory is proof that you can achieve anything you put your mind into,” Nzimande added.
