The City of Johannesburg’s Arbor Month Campaign launch took place earlier today at the Hampton Park in Lenasia South Ext 1.

The Campaign themed “Forest and health” was officially initiated by the MMCs (Members of the Mayoral Committee) of Economic Development and Community Development, Cllr Nomoya Mnisi and Cllr Lubabalo Magwentshu.

The event was attended by various dignitaries and community members, including: Thanduxolo Mendrew – The Managing Director for Johannesburg City Park and Zoo (JCPZ); Cllr Margaret Arnolds – Chairperson of the Section 79 Committee; Mickey Padiachee – Regional Director for Region G; Cllr Puseletso Nzimande – Ward 120 Councillor; the principal, educators and learners of Madiba Primary School; JCPZ and City officials; residents and other guests.

A total of 50 trees were planted at the park to mark the occasion. MMC Lubabalo Magwentshu emphasized the importance of Arbor Day and the significance of the event. He highlighted that Arbor Day is not just a commemoration but a call to action, encouraging people to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.

Magwentshu also urged attendees to take responsibility for the environment. He said: “Our choices, our actions, and our dedication to the environment have significant consequences. Planting a tree is seen as a vital step toward a more sustainable future.”

JCPZ’s Mendrew delivered a vote of thanks appreciating everyone that played a role in making the event a success.

Arbor Day and Arbor Week are national campaigns in South Africa that aim to celebrate the country’s trees and raise awareness about their importance. These initiatives encourage individuals and communities to take proactive steps in preserving and planting trees for the benefit of the environment and future generations.
